FAQs

• It doesn't work!
  Sorry. It turns out that triggering multiple audio samples simultaneously is pretty hard for some browsers to cope with. It works well on recent versions of Chrome and Safari on OS X or Windows, and seems pretty solid on IE. Support on Linux is variable, but we're working on it. In general you probably need a computer that's less than three years old. No iOS support yet, we're afraid.
• I'm on the latest Chrome on 16 core Mac Pro, and it still doesn't work!
  Sound support falls back to Flash (from HTML5) in some cases; you may have a Flashblocker or Adblocker which is preventing Flash from working. If you're sure it should be working, please email us at sing@torchbox.com with the details, and we'll try to work it out.
• How did you make this?
  We recorded every person singing three different durations of each note (on a Rode NT1A with an Apogee Duet), and sliced them up in Logic Pro, using a teeny bit of Melodyne for the odd tuning fix. The audio was converted into MP3 and OGG files, and we built a Javascript player which triggers and holds the relevant sample based on note and duration. The song data is stored as JSON, and we wrote a midi to JSON convertor in Ruby to help us create new arrangements. The site runs on a small Django VM.
• How can I add a song?

  You can play us in real time, using the mouse or keyboard. When you're ready to record a performance, head over to the 'Record your carol' panel where you can lay down as many parts as you like, and re-record each one until you're happy with how it sounds. Once you're done, click on Save and you'll be able to share your creation by Twitter, Facebook or email.

  For power users who need a bit more control, there's also the option of creating your song as MIDI file - email us your file, and we'll convert and add it for you. Here's an example file which uses the full range of the choir; anything outside this range won't get played.
